Guided by moderator Gwen Hsin-Yi Chang, head of international partnerships (2017-21) at National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts, an international panel of circus experts will delve into the challenges and pleasures of creating and presenting circus today – from insightful discussions of daily practice to re-establishing connections with local communities as well as supportive shareholders further afield. Like all 21st-century artists, circus practitioners – regardless of their cultural differences – are needing to learn how to stay true to their creative paths and core values in what can seem like increasingly difficult times. What are their plans of action now and in the future?

Gwen Hsin-Yi Chang
Curator of 2021 Circus Platform at National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying)

Hsin-Yi, aka Gwen in international dance and circus networks, started up the project-based AxE Arts Management while living in Germany. After presenting many artists and companies world-wide she joined the artistic planning and production team of the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) as head of international partnerships (2017-2021), There her responsibility for the dance and circus programmes led to the curation of the Taiwan Dance and Weiwuying Circus Platforms. In April 2021 she relocated to Luxembourg where she has been enriching her research by writing and dialoguing in the dance and circus sectors.

 

Tai-Jung Yu
International Affairs Manager & Resident Dramaturg of Formosa Circus Arts

While at FOCA Tai-Jung Yu has planned the Interdisciplinary Trilogy project with artistic director Tsung-Hsun Lee and also produced its second part ‘Disappearing Island,’ a collaboration with the Filipino visual artist Leeroy New. Along with representing FOCA as one of the founding committees of Circus Asia Network (CAN), Yu contributes to the cultivation of visibility and publicity of contemporary circus art both in Taiwan and abroad. He curated the first Contemporary Circus Forum in Taiwan in 2018 and co-curated the second edition the following year. Since 2020 he has been chief editor of DÚ MÂ XÌ-a seasonal Taiwan Circus Media.

 

Cheng-I Ho
Co-founder & Supervisor, Taiwan Street Arts and Culture Development Association / Street Artist

Cheng-I Ho began juggling while in college and has since kept working in the circus field. He was co-founder of Taiwan Street Arts and Culture Development Association (Str.ACD), and elected as one of its directors in 2018. His major work encompasses digital marketing, international project execution,and administration. In 2020 he was elected supervisor of Str.ACD, providing him with a new role in which to help street arts grow.

 

Michiko Tanaka
Director and Founder of Setouchi Circus Factory

After working for Hokkaido Shimbun Press and Setouchi Art Triennale, Michiko Tanaka set up Setouchi Circus Factory (SCF) independently. The axis of SCF is artistic creation and its distinction is in being conscious about connection and collaboration with locals. SCF has realised many unique projects with area industries, municipalities and so on. By stepping out from the smaller art community, SCF and its activities have attracted support from many diverse stakeholders.

 

Adrian Berry
Artistic Director of Jacksons Lane

Adrian is closely linked with one of the UK's leading circus and arts centres, Jacksons Lane. As venue director and programmer he has worked with the National Theatre, Stratford Circus, the Albany and Trinity amongst many others. Adrian is a producer, writer and director, musician and songwriter who both wrote and directed the successful production From Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads. He has produced circus-based work nationally and internationally, as well as representing the UK at circus festivals around the globe.
