Hao Cheng’s mathematical background gives him a unique perspective on abstract ideas and flesh-and-blood performance. His highly personal and proudly low-tech solo for Incandescence Dance is a dynamic fusion of popular science and the poetry of motion. Featuring a blackboard-like surface and chalk as a means of charting Cheng’s ceaselessly nimble, fully-felt movement, his dance gradually transforms into a visual art installation. This original and elegantly-conceived film lends quantum physics and the uncertainty principle fresh meaning and a human face.
‘Incandescence company’s Touchdown, a quirky, intriguing gem of a show with moments of brilliance as Hao Cheng demonstrates that both physics and art can be beautiful.’ by Stephanie Green - Broadway Baby ★★★★
‘Or there’s Touchdown, a half-dance, half-physics lecture from Taiwan, in which Cheng Hao combines discussing the reckless and unpredictable nature of electrons with insomniac musings on the meaning of life, while seemingly peeling himself from the ceiling.’ by Lyndsey Winship - The Guardian
‘It’s a fascinating, absorbing 30-minute science meets art solo’
‘While he destroys his carefully drawn diagram in the process, he simultaneously creates a new artwork that effectively shows visual traces of his energy.’ by David Mead - SeeingDance
‘A dance work based on physics, which culminates in a visual art installation was always going to catch my attention, but Hao Cheng’s Touchdown went beyond that and captivated me.’
‘From using himself as a compass to draw concentric circles, to examining the history of concepts in physics, Hao Cheng draws his mathematical background into his choreography and in doing so finds new avenues of creative exploration, which address age-old questions in innovative ways.’ by Saoirse Anton - Sitting on The Fourth Wall
‘I cannot fault the sheer brilliance of the physical attributes and visuals, these were utterly superb.’ by Nia Powell - A Younger Theatre
Incandescence Dance
Founded by Hao Cheng in New Taipei City. Incandescence Dance’s goal is to create a dance/theatre with scientific and mathematical thinking based on contemporary dance. They believe that the core pursuit of the scientific spirit, as well as art, comes from people’s curiosity about the world, and is also full of poetry. This kind of poetry is the root of all human actions. Behind every scientific concept, theorem and law, poetic metaphors and contrasts and hidden.
Incandescence Dance will not advance with the technological process, but with the humanistic meaning of scientific thinking as the main axis of creation, in the form of transformation, metaphor, etc., revealing the poetry of science and art, and the exploration and application of the body will never be absent. The proper integration of science, art, and body to produce unique styles of dance works and share them with everyone is the most determined goal of Incandescence Dance team.
